AI Call Assistant: The Three Kinds, What They Cost, and Which One You Need (2026)

“AI call assistant” means three different products. One answers the phone for you: an AI receptionist that greets callers, answers common questions and books appointments. One is built into your phone: iPhone and Pixel can now screen unknown callers, wait on hold, record and translate calls. The third helps you during your own calls, showing answers, prompts and notes while you talk to a client. Most people searching for an AI call assistant need only one of them, and they don’t overlap much.

Checked in October 2026. Facts about phones come from Apple’s and Google’s own pages; prices come from each vendor’s pricing page and change often. We make Realtimer, one of the tools in the third group.

Three kinds of AI call assistant, and who does the talking in each.

1. AI receptionists: the assistant that answers for you

An AI receptionist picks up when you can’t. It greets the caller with your business name, answers the questions you trained it on (opening hours, prices, service area), books an appointment in your calendar, takes a message or transfers the call to a person. You give it a phone number, or forward your existing number to it, and it works day and night.

Prices from the vendors’ own pages:

ServicePlansHow it’s billed
RosieProfessional $49 a month (250 minutes), Scale $149 (1,000 minutes), Growth $299 (2,000 minutes)By minutes; 7-day free trial
GoodcallStarter $79 a month (100 unique customers, about 150 calls), Growth $129 (500), Scale $299 (2,000)By unique callers, minutes not metered; extra callers 79¢, 26¢ or 15¢ depending on plan
Smith.aiAI and human receptionist plansPlans and per-call overage are quoted differently across guides; check Smith.ai’s pricing page

The billing models differ more than the prices. A business with a few long calls is better off paying per caller; one with many short calls, per minute. Before you choose, count last month’s calls and their average length.

Before you switch it on, call it yourself a few times. Ask something it wasn’t trained on: a good setup transfers the call or takes a message instead of guessing. Book an appointment and check that it lands in your real calendar or booking tool, and that the caller gets a confirmation. Test a transfer to a person during busy hours.

Outbound calls need more care. In February 2024 the US Federal Communications Commission ruled that AI-generated voices count as “artificial” voices under the Telephone Consumer Protection Act. An AI agent that calls people, rather than answering their calls, generally needs their prior express consent, the same as a prerecorded robocall.

2. Built-in phone features: the assistant you already have

Recent phones do part of this job for free.

iPhone

iOS 26 added three features to the Phone app, according to Apple:

  • Call Screening builds on Live Voicemail. It gathers information from an unknown caller and gives you the details to decide whether to answer.
  • Hold Assist waits on hold for you and notifies you when a live agent is available.
  • Live Translation in Phone translates the call as you talk. Apple says it runs on Apple-built models entirely on the device. In Phone and FaceTime it works for one-on-one calls in English (US and UK), French, German, Portuguese (Brazil) and Spanish (Spain).

Call recording arrived earlier, in iOS 18.1. When you start recording, the iPhone plays an announcement so everyone on the call knows, and the recording and its transcript are saved in the Notes app.

Pixel

Google groups its features under Pixel Call Assist:

  • Call Screen shows who is calling and why before you pick up. Google says it runs on the device without using Wi-Fi or mobile data.
  • Hold for Me waits on hold and tells you when a representative is ready.
  • Direct My Call shows an automated phone menu on screen, so you tap a choice instead of listening to it.
  • Call Notes records the call, writes a transcript and summarizes the main points.

Availability depends on the phone model, the country and the language, so check your own settings before you count on a feature.

Built-in features help with calls you receive and with talking to call centers. They don’t know your products, your prices or your clients, so they can’t help you answer a client’s question.

3. In-call assistants: help while you’re talking

This is the kind for people whose work happens on calls: a salesperson asked about pricing, a real estate agent asked about a unit, a recruiter asked about the salary band. The assistant listens to the call and shows something useful while it’s happening.

The first difference is where they work. Some run inside one phone system and only on its calls. Aircall AI Assist Pro shows a live transcript and prompts during Aircall calls, guided by a sales playbook, for $49 per user a month on annual billing on top of an Aircall plan. Dialpad’s live coach cards work inside Dialpad. Others run on your computer and work with any call app.

The second is where the help comes from: cards a manager writes in advance, a sales framework, or your own documents. Answers from your own price list and product sheets fit the question the client actually asked.

The third is whether they join the call. Some record by joining the meeting as a participant, a bot the other side can see. Others listen to the audio on your own computer, and nothing appears in the participant list.

Contact centers are a separate market. Balto, for example, gives real-time guidance to agents on softphones and says it may not suit teams with fewer than 10 agents. We compared options for small teams in our Balto alternatives guide.

Realtimer is an in-call assistant for Mac. It listens to the call on your computer, so it works with Zoom, Meet, Teams, WhatsApp and web dialers and no bot joins. When the client asks a question, you press a key and see an answer from your own files in about a second, with the source; after the call it writes notes. It costs nothing with your own API keys, or €29 a month on Pro with AI and transcription included. It works on calls on your Mac, not on your mobile phone’s regular calls. More on the sales assistant page.

Which AI call assistant do you need?

Your situationWhat to use
You run a small business and miss calls while you workAn AI receptionist
You want fewer spam calls and less time on holdYour phone’s built-in features

Some people need two: a receptionist for the calls they can’t take, and an in-call assistant for the ones they do.

Recording, consent and AI calls

Every kind of AI call assistant processes the conversation, so recording and consent rules apply to all of them.

  • In the US, about a dozen states, including California, Florida and Illinois, require everyone on a call to agree to recording. On calls between states, the safe default is the stricter rule.
  • In the EU and UK, data protection law (GDPR and UK GDPR) covers recording and transcribing calls, and you need a lawful basis and must tell people.
  • Under the FCC’s February 2024 ruling, an outbound call with an AI-generated voice falls under the same consent rules as a prerecorded call.
  • The iPhone announces its own recordings. With other tools, say it yourself: “I use an assistant that transcribes this call. Is that OK?”

FAQ

What is an AI call assistant?

Software that helps with phone or video calls. The term covers three things: AI receptionists that answer calls for you, built-in phone features such as call screening and hold assist, and in-call assistants that show answers and notes while you talk.

Can an AI answer my business calls?

Yes. AI receptionists such as Rosie and Goodcall answer calls, reply to common questions, book appointments and take messages. Plans start at about $49 to $79 a month.

Does iPhone have an AI call assistant?

iOS 26 added Call Screening, Hold Assist and Live Translation to the Phone app, and iOS 18.1 added call recording with transcripts. The iPhone announces a recording to everyone on the call.

Is there an AI that helps me during a sales call?

Yes, in-call assistants such as Realtimer, Aircall AI Assist Pro and Dialpad Ai listen to the call and show answers or prompts while you talk.

Is it legal to use an AI call assistant?

Generally yes, if you follow recording and consent rules. Some US states require everyone on the call to agree, the EU’s GDPR requires a lawful basis and notice, and outbound calls with an AI voice need the called person’s prior consent under the FCC’s 2024 ruling.

Do AI call assistants join the call?

AI receptionists take the call themselves. In-call assistants either join as a bot participant or listen on your own computer without joining; built-in phone features run on the phone.
